New Delhi, Feb 26 (.): A protest by students of the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ union (JNUSU) escalated into violence on Thursday, when they marched from the JNU campus towards the Ministry of Education despite warnings from authorities, an official said.
According to the cops, around 400–500 students gathered, ignoring requests to restrict their demonstration to the campus.
As per the reports, the protest turned aggressive as students damaged barricades, pelted banners and sticks, and even physically assaulted Delhi Police personnel, with some officers reportedly bitten during the scuffle.
The protesters were stopped at the North Gate of JNU and gradually moved back inside the campus. Amid the protest, several police personnel also sustained injuries in the incident.
Officers have confirmed that those who became violent and disobeyed lawful orders were detained.
The JNU administration had earlier stated that such protests outside campus grounds were not permitted. Further updates are expected as the probe into this matter is ongoing.
