New Delhi, Feb 28 (.) Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Saturday said the people of Punjab face a “big battle” and must fight on two fronts, against the Modi-led government at the Centre and the AAP government in the state.
In a statement, Kharge accused both the Centre and the state government of failing the people of Punjab, particularly farmers and workers. “The people of Punjab have a big battle to fight. They have to fight on two fronts, against the Modi government and also against the AAP government in Punjab,” he said.
Referring to Punjab’s history of agrarian resistance, Kharge recalled that during British rule, the country’s first major farmers’ movement was launched in 1907 under the leadership of Sardar Ajit Singh and had succeeded.
He also invoked the legacy of Bhagat Singh, describing him as “a son of this very soil” whose dream was to improve the lives of farmers and workers and free them from exploitation.
Quoting the revolutionary leader, Kharge said, “It is in your interest to unite by erasing divisions of religion, color, race, and discrimination.”
Kharge alleged that the policies of the Narendra Modi-led government run contrary to Bhagat Singh’s ideals. “The Modi government is working in the opposite direction of his ideals and is engaged in policies that are harming the country’s farmers and workers,” he said.
The Congress chief also emphasized his party’s historical connection with Punjab. “The Congress Party’s roots are deeply embedded in the soil of Punjab. We have always fought for unity, secularism, and social justice,” he stated.
He added that the party believes political power should remain with ordinary citizens rather than being concentrated in the hands of a few. “We fight for the rights of the people. Our belief is that power should rest in the hands of ordinary people, not in the hands of a few powerful individuals,” Kharge said.
