Los Angeles, Jan 10 (.) Danya Jimenez and Hannah McMechan, the screenwriting duo behind the hit animated film KPop Demon Hunters, have signed on to pen the screenplay for Tim Burton’s reimagining of the classic 1958 sci-fi horror film ‘Attack of the Fifty Foot Woman’, according to Variety.
Warner Bros. Pictures tapped Jimenez and McMechan for the project, which was first announced in 2024. Burton, known for classics like Beetlejuice and The Nightmare Before Christmas, is set to direct the update, which follows a wealthy heiress who grows to giant size after an alien encounter and seeks revenge on her unfaithful husband.
Burton will also produce alongside Andrew Mittman and Tommy Harper, with Gillian Flynn having penned an earlier draft of the script.
The film is being produced and developed by LuckyChap, the company led by Margot Robbie, Tom Ackerley, and Josey McNamara, with Morgan Begg, the company’s director of development, overseeing the project. Kai Dolbashian serves as executive producer, Variety reports.
Jimenez and McMechan, who met while attending Loyola Marymount University, were named to Variety’s 10 Screenwriters to Watch for 2025 after writing the global hit KPop Demon Hunters for Sony Animation and Netflix, alongside co-director Maggie Kang.
The duo first connected with the project through the Sundance Feature Lab, where fellow screenwriter Nicole Perlman approached them with the idea that eventually became KPop Demon Hunters.
“We started writing that in 2020 during the pandemic,” Jimenez told Variety last year.
“At first, we were like, ‘This is going to be the biggest movie ever,’ and then as time passed, we were like, ‘Maybe it won’t get made. Who knows?’ And then we were on set this summer, the trailer dropped, and we were shocked. You don’t really expect anything from this career. You’re just grateful to get paid and if something happens with it, that’s great.”
McMechan added, “This was truly the first time where there was all this manpower behind it, and it felt like it was on track to being made.”
Since its release last summer, KPop Demon Hunters has become a global phenomenon, emerging as Netflix’s most-watched film of all time, with its songs breaking Billboard 200 records.
The film is also nominated for three Golden Globe Awards, including Best Animated Motion Picture, Best Original Song, and Cinematic and Box Office Achievement.
