Riyadh, Mar 2 (.) Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Defence today said it had intercepted and destroyed five “hostile drones” near the country’s Prince Sultan Air Base, a key military installation south of Riyadh that hosts US forces.
In a brief statement, the ministry said Saudi air defences managed to deal with the incoming projectiles before they could reach their intended targets. No injuries or damages were reported.
Prince Sultan Air Base houses roughly 2,700 US personnel, along with missile defence systems and other assets, deployed as part of Washington’s regional security umbrella. The facility has played a central role in Washington’s air operations and surveillance across the Gulf.
The base was also reportedly targeted by Iranian missiles over the weekend, amid escalating hostilities following US and Israeli strikes on Iran. There have been no confirmed reports of American casualties in Saudi Arabia since the three countries embarked on war on Saturday, post the Israeli strikes.
