Imphal, Feb 14 (.) Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh on Saturday announced that the State Government is committed to develop a world-class polo ground at Lamphelpat in Imphal West.
Though it is the dream of every polo player to play in Manipur as modern polo originated in Manipur there is no proper polo ground of international standard.
The announcement was made during the closing ceremony of the 2nd Dr. Ksh. Chourjit Singh Inter-District Polo Tournament, 2026, held at Mapal Kangjeibung and organised by the Manipur Horse Riding and Polo Association (MHRPA), Imphal.
Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister stated that it is well known that the game of polo originated in Manipur.
He noted that he had been informed that the existing Mapal Kangjeibung Polo Ground does not meet the necessary standards for hosting international matches.
In this regard, he said the government has earmarked a 32-acre plot of land at Lamphelpat for the development of a modern, world-class polo ground.
Khemchand Singh reiterated his firm commitment to the initiative and assured that he would personally visit the proposed site tomorrow along with concerned officials and members of MHRPA to inspect the area and deliberate on the modalities for the development of the facility.
The final match of the tournament commenced with the ceremonial throw-in of the polo ball by the Chief Minister. A total of ten teams participated in the tournament.
The closing ceremony was attended by family members of Ksh. Chourjit Singh, President of MHRPA H. Deleep Singh, Technical Chairman MHRPA N. Bedajeet Singh, Ksh. Lakshaheb Singh, and students, among others.
In the final match X-Polo Club, defeated Chingkhei Hunba Polo Club 6–4 in a competitive encounter .
Chingkhei Hunba Polo Club, representing Kongpal and playing in light blue jerseys, opened strongly with three goals in the first chukker. However, they were unable to maintain momentum in the subsequent periods, adding just one more goal to finish at four.
X-Polo Club of Wangkei, dressed in blue, staged a steady comeback. After a goalless first chukker, they netted two goals in the second, one in the third, and two more in the fourth. A final goal in the fifth chukker sealed their 6–4 triumph.
The match was officiated by mounted umpires T. Pradip and T.K. Basanta. S. Umamanda Sharma served as Timekeeper, while L. Bachman officiated as Scorer.
With this victory, X-Polo Club emerged champions of the prestigious inter-district tournament, marking a significant achievement in this year’s polo calendar. L Atangba of X Polo Club was given the best player award.
