New Delhi, Jan 6 (.) The stock market on Tuesday extended its decline for a second consecutive session with Nifty closing below 26,200. Selling was seen in the oil & gas, media and energy.
At close, the Sensex was down 376.28 points or 0.44% at 85,063.34, and the Nifty was down 71.60 points or 0.27% at 26,178.70.
Among the sectors, Nifty Oil & Gas declined 1.67%, followed by Nifty Media, Nifty Chemicals, and Nifty Realty, each falling between 0.27% and 1.15%.
Furhter, Nifty Pharma rallied 1.63%, while Nifty PSU Bank, Nifty IT, and Nifty Metal rose in the range of 0.3% to 0.6%.
The BSE Midcap and Smallcap indices lost 0.24% and 0.39%, respectively, and the overall market capitalisation of BSE-listed firms dropped to Rs 479 crore from nearly Rs 481 lakh crore in the previous session.
The Indian rupee snapped the four-day losing streak and appreciated 12 paise to settle at 90.18 (provisional) against the US dollar.
On Nifty, the top losers were Trent, Reliance Industries, ITC, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Interglobe Aviation while gainers were Apollo Hospitals, ICICI Bank, HDFC Life, Sun Pharma and Tata Consumer.
Nearly 140 stocks touched 52-week high while more than 120 stocks hit 52-week low on BSE.
Those hitting highs included Aether Industries, NALCO, IIFL Finance, Bajaj Auto, Hindalco Industries, Graphite India, union Bank of India, Hindustan Copper, eClerx Services, SBI Life Insurance, SBI, Bank of India, among others.
While on lows were Premier Energies, Vedant Fashions, Mahanagar Gas, ITC, Page Industries, Cohance Life, United Breweries, Clean Science, Jubilant Foodwoks, Tata Chemicals, among others.
Among some of the key performers, National Aluminium Company Ltd (NALCO) shares settled 4.8% higher. Swiggy extended its losses to a third straight session, tumbling 4.6% to Rs 361.
HDFC Bank shares dropped over 2% extending notable losses for the second consecutive session after releasing Q3 business update.
Bajaj Auto shares climbed up to 3% to hit a fresh 52-week high after brokerage firm Emkay Global upgraded the stock to ‘buy’ and raised its target price.
