New Delhi, Feb 2 (.) Olympic medallist and boxing icon Mary Kom has issued a public apology for remarks she made about her ex-husband Onler during a recent appearance on national television, following widespread criticism and trolling on social media.
In an Instagram video posted on Sunday, Mary Kom said her comments on the talk show were misunderstood and were made in an emotionally overwhelming moment.
“I want to apologise. Many people on social media got confused due to my statements,” Mary said in the video, which she captioned ‘Jai Hind, Jai Bharat’. “I sincerely apologise to everyone, especially the wider male community, who felt hurt or disappointed by my comment. My statement was never meant to target all men, nor was it intended to insult or demean any individual.”
The six-time world champion explained that her remarks stemmed from personal issues and years of emotional distress. “That remark was purely linked to a personal conflict between us. At that moment, years of suppressed pain, depression, and the feeling of being used and betrayed surfaced all at once,” she said.
Mary Kom also clarified that her comments were not directed against football, football culture, or the sporting fraternity. She said she respected the sport and enjoyed playing it herself, adding that every athlete begins their journey at the grassroots level.
“Those who work hard and remain determined become players like Sunil Chhetri or Bhaichung Bhutia,” she said, dismissing claims that her comments were aimed at any sport or its players.
Addressing her ex-husband’s assertion that he sacrificed his football career for their marriage, Mary stated that while Onler had played football in Shillong, he had already quit the sport by the time they met in Delhi.
She also refuted suggestions that her marriage had been unsuccessful from the beginning. “Everything was fine for many years. When trust broke completely, things changed,” she said.
Mary Kom further noted that following their divorce in April 2025, she had refrained from making any public statements despite allegations being levelled against her. “I have always conducted myself with dignity and restraint,” she added.
The multi-time world champion appeared on the talk show, and her statement about her ex-husband that he “didn’t earn a single rupee” became an online sensation, which resulted in people accusing her of diminishing his worth.
The former world champion’s apology comes amid intense public debate over personal boundaries, public discourse, and the responsibilities of sporting icons in the media spotlight.
