Chandigarh, March 3 (.) The ongoing military conflict between Israel and Iran, which has entered its fourth day and impacted nine neighbouring nations, has now begun to cast a shadow over the industrial landscape of Punjab.
The renowned hand tool industry in Jalandhar is facing significant disruption as escalating regional instability hampers international travel and trade routes essential to global commerce.
Jalandhar’s hand tool sector, a cornerstone of India’s manufacturing prowess, is currently grappling with the aftermath of the geopolitical crisis. Several prominent industrialists from the city, who were en route to Germany to participate in a prestigious annual exhibition, have reportedly been stranded mid-journey. Due to the sudden volatility in the Middle East, these exporters have found themselves stuck at transit points, including Doha, unable to proceed to their destination or return immediately.
Sharing details on the developing situation, Ashwani Sharma of the Federation of Indian Export Organisation (FIEO) stated that the annual hand tool exhibition in Germany is a landmark event for the sector, attended by many for over five decades. He confirmed that a group of industrialists and their associates are currently stranded in Doha while attempting to reach the fair. Sharma added that they are in active communication with the central government to facilitate their safe passage and ensure a swift resolution to their travel predicament.
The economic implications of a prolonged conflict are substantial for the region. The hand tool industry in India accounts for an annual export turnover of approximately Rs 3,000 crore. Industry experts warn that if the hostilities between Israel and Iran do not subside soon, the sector could face losses running into hundreds of crores. The disruption of logistics and the potential cancellation of international business deals remain a primary concern for local manufacturers who rely heavily on European markets.
