Los Angeles, Jan 17 (.) Universal Pictures has announced that Mike Flanagan’s upcoming “The Exorcist” film will arrive in theaters on March 12, 2027, according to Variety.
The movie stars Oscar nominee Scarlett Johansson alongside “Hamnet” breakout Jacobi Jupe. Originally slated for release earlier this year, the film was delayed due to production schedules.
Flanagan, known for “The Fall of the House of Usher,” “Doctor Sleep,” and “The Life of Chuck,” is writing, directing, and producing the new installment for Universal and Blumhouse-Atomic Monster. The project has been described as a “radical new take” on the iconic horror franchise, as per Variety.
The original Exorcist, directed by William Friedkin in 1973, follows a mother (Ellen Burstyn) who calls on two Catholic priests to exorcise her demonically possessed 12-year-old daughter (Linda Blair).
The classic was both a critical and commercial hit, earning 10 Oscar nominations and grossing USD 441 million worldwide.
In 2021, Universal acquired the rights for a new Exorcist trilogy for a reported USD 400 million. 2023’s ‘The Exorcist: Believer’ brought back Ellen Burstyn as Chris MacNeil, earning USD 136 million globally. Flanagan’s upcoming film is set in the same universe as the 1973 original, but it is not a direct sequel to Believer.
The film is produced by David Robinson, Jason Blum, and Flanagan, with Alexandra Magistro and Ryan Turek serving as executive producers. It is a Blumhouse-Atomic Monster and Morgan Creek Entertainment production, in association with Flanagan’s Red Room Pictures.
According to Variety, this marks Flanagan’s fourth collaboration with Blumhouse, following 2013’s “Oculus,” 2016’s “Hush,” and 2016’s “Ouija: Origin of Evil.” His most recent film, 2024’s “The Life of Chuck,” won the TIFF Audience Award.
