Los Angeles, Dec 31 (.) The makers of ‘Stranger Things 5’ have unveiled the trailer for the finale episode, which is set to premiere on December 31 on Netflix, followed by a limited theatrical release.
Titled ‘The Rightside Up’, the finale marks the eighth and final episode of the show’s fifth and concluding season. Netflix released the first four episodes of Season 5 on Thanksgiving as ‘Stranger Things 5: Volume 1’, while the next three episodes dropped on Christmas as ‘Volume 2’.
Volume 2 ended with Episode 7, in which Max (Sadie Sink) regains consciousness and reveals Vecna’s ultimate plan, to merge the real world with a parallel dimension beyond the Upside Down, known as the Abyss.
The group then formulates a mission to enter the Abyss, rescue Vecna’s captive children, and destroy the dimension using a bomb. The episode’s final moments show Vecna, still posing as Henry Creel, leading his brainwashed victims in a haunting scene as they are transported to the Abyss.
The newly released trailer features callback moments from across the franchise, including intense confrontations with Vecna and other terrifying creatures. Sharing the clip on Instagram, Netflix described it as “one last trailer.”
According to Variety, creators Matt and Ross Duffer first introduced Stranger Things nearly a decade ago, with the debut season arriving on Netflix in July 2016.
The paranormal drama quickly became a global phenomenon, followed by Season 2 in 2017 and Season 3 in 2019. Like the final season, Season 4 was also released in two volumes in May and July 2022.
The franchise has since expanded beyond television, spawning the stage production ‘Stranger Things: The First Shadow’, which premiered in London’s West End in 2023 and is currently running on Broadway.
As reported by Variety, the finale episode has a runtime of two hours and five minutes and marks the series’ first big-screen release. The episode will screen in over 500 theatres across the United States and Canada, beginning on New Year’s Eve, in sync with its Netflix debut, and will continue playing through January 1.
