Los Angeles, Jan 17 (.) Cate Blanchett is set to return to the world of dragons in the upcoming live-action sequel of ‘How to Train Your Dragon’. The two-time Oscar winner, who previously voiced ‘Valka—Hiccup’s’ long-lost mother, in the animated franchise, has officially signed on to reprise her role in the live-action series, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ saga follows Hiccup, a scrawny Viking teenager who forms an unlikely bond with an injured Night Fury dragon he names Toothless.
Their friendship challenges generations of hostility between Vikings and dragons, reshaping their world in the process.
The sequel is set five years after the events of the first film and centers on an older Hiccup and his friends as they encounter Valka.
Together, they must confront a dangerous adversary determined to dominate the world. The live-action sequel is expected to mirror the storyline of the second animated film, continuing Hiccup’s journey as he works to establish peaceful coexistence between humans and dragons.
Dean DeBlois, co-creator of the franchise and the writer-director of the first live-action adaptation released in 2025, returns to helm the sequel. The initial live-action film proved to be a major success, earning USD 636 million at the global box office, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
Blanchett joins a returning cast that includes Mason Thames, Nico Parker, Gerard Butler, Julian Dennison, Gabriel Howell, Bronwyn James, and Harry Trevaldwyn. The film is being produced by Marc Platt under Universal’s Marc Platt Productions, alongside Adam Siegel.
The live-action ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ sequel is scheduled to release in theatres on June 11, 2027.
