Los Angeles, Feb 12 (.) Paris-based sales company MMM Film Sales has picked up international sales rights to Rima Das’ latest feature, ‘Not a Hero’, ahead of its world premiere in the Generation section at the Berlin Film Festival.
The India-Singapore co-production, filmed in Assamese, Hindi and English, follows a young boy who is sent from the city to his ancestral village. There, he navigates a strained relationship with his aunt, forms an unexpected bond with a horse and joins local children on a series of adventures. Through these experiences, he discovers resilience and the quiet beauty of rural life, according to Variety.
The cast includes Bhuman Bhargav Das, Sukanya Boruah and Mrinmoy Das. ‘MMM’ described the film as a contemporary take on a Huckleberry Finn–style journey, reflecting on the world future generations will inherit. The company noted that Not a Hero explores themes of roots, friendship, values and the meeting point between past and present.
Rima Das is known for her intimate storytelling set against natural landscapes. Her previous films include Village Rockstars (2017), India’s official entry to the 2019 Academy Awards; Bulbul Can Sing (2018); Tora’s Husband (2022); and Village Rockstars 2 (2024). Her work has screened at over 150 festivals worldwide, earning more than 75 awards, with selections at Toronto, Berlin and Busan, as per Variety.
‘Not a Hero’ is produced by Flying River Films (India), Akanga Film Asia (Singapore) and TrainTripper Films (India). TrainTripper founders Chippy Babu and Abhishek Sharma said the company supports filmmakers with distinct voices who spark meaningful conversations, adding that they are honored to collaborate with Das on a film they believe will resonate globally.
At the European Film Market, MMM will also showcase several titles on its slate, including Cris Tapia’s Gunman (which premiered in Rotterdam), Abdelkarim El-Fassi’s Porte Bagage (world premiered at Marrakech), Junna Chif’s Invisibles and Andrés Clariond Rangel’s Versalles, produced by Nicolàs Celis and competing at PÖFF Tallinn.
Additional titles include Bearcave by K. Papadakis and S. Dinopoulos (selected for Venice’s Giornate degli Autori), Stroma Cairns’ The Son and the Sea (a BIFA nominee that screened at TIFF, San Sebastián and BFI London), and Laurent Slama’s A Second Life, starring Agathe Rousselle and Alex Lawther, which will be released in Germany by Port au Prince, as reported by Variety.
