New Delhi, Feb 19 (.) Mukesh D. Ambani, the chairman and managing director of Reliance Industries Limited, on Thursday announced plans to invest Rs 10 lakh crores over the next seven years to build what he described as India’s sovereign artificial intelligence infrastructure, including huge AI-ready data centres.
Speaking at the India AI Summit, Ambani said the investment, to be led by Reliance and its digital arm Jio Platforms, would begin this year and focus on large-scale data centers, renewable energy capacity and nationwide edge computing.
“This is patient, disciplined, nation-building capital, designed to create durable economic value and strategic resilience for decades to come,” the oil refining to telecom tycoon said.
The announcement represents one of the largest private-sector commitments to artificial intelligence infrastructure globally and underscores India’s ambitions to reduce dependence on foreign cloud providers while accelerating domestic AI capabilities.
The first pillar of the strategy is the construction of gigawatt-scale, AI-ready data centres. Reliance has already begun work on multi-gigawatt facilities in Jamnagar, in the western state of Gujarat. More than 120 megawatts of capacity are expected to come online in the second half of 2026, with what the company described as a “clear path” toward gigawatt-scale computing power for training and large-scale inference workloads.
The second element relies on the conglomerate’s expanding renewable energy portfolio. Ambani said Reliance has up to 10 gigawatts of green power surplus available, primarily from solar installations in Kutch, Gujarat, and in Andhra Pradesh. That capacity, he said, would give the company an “in-house energy advantage” as power-hungry AI models drive global demand for electricity.
The third initiative involves building a nationwide edge-computing layer integrated with Jio’s telecom network. By bringing processing capacity closer to users, the company aims to reduce latency and lower costs, enabling AI applications to operate in real time across both urban and rural India.
“From kirana stores to clinics, from classrooms to farms — intelligence will live at the edge,” Ambani said.
