New Delhi, Jan 26 (.) Hema Malini, the wife of legendary actor Dharmendra, who has been conferred with the Padma Vibhushan in recognition of his immense contribution to the Indian film industry, said she takes immense pride in the honour.
Reacting to the award, the veteran actor-politician expressed her gratitude, saying, “I am so proud that the government has recognised Dharam ji’s immense contribution to the film industry by bestowing on him the prestigious Padma Vibhushan award.”
Fondly known as Hindi cinema’s ‘He-Man’, Dharmendra passed away on November 24, 2025, leaving behind an irreplaceable void in the industry. Celebrated for his gentle smile, charismatic screen presence, and a career spanning over six decades, he remained a beloved figure both on and off screen.
Widely regarded as one of the most iconic actors of Indian cinema, Dharmendra delivered memorable performances in films such as ‘Aya Sawan Jhoom Ke’, ‘Sholay’, ‘Chupke Chupke’, ‘Ayee Milan Ki Bela’ and ‘Anupama’, among many others.
Beyond his on-screen versatility, he was admired for his enduring contribution to cinema and for inspiring generations of fans worldwide.
On the eve of Republic Day, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) unveiled the official list of Padma Awardees for 2026. The prestigious civilian honours recognise individuals from diverse fields, including arts, literature, social service, medicine, education, and public service, for their excellence, dedication and long-term contributions to society.
The Padma Awards, among the highest civilian honours in the country, are conferred in three categories, Padma Vibhushan for exceptional and distinguished service, Padma Bhushan for distinguished service of a high order, and Padma Shri for distinguished service in any field.
The awards are presented by the President of India at ceremonial functions, usually held in March or April each year.
