Mogadishu, Feb 12 (.) The African union (AU) Executive Council has elected 10 countries to the organization’s Peace and Security Council (PSC), including Somalia for the first time, the organization’s Political Affairs, Peace and Security (PAPS) department said.
“The 48th Ordinary Session of the AU Executive Council (11 to 12 Feb 2026), elected Benin, Gabon, Lesotho, Morocco, Somalia, and South Africa, and re-elected Cote d’Ivoire, DR Congo, Sierra Leone and Uganda as PSC Members for the 2026–2028 term (1 April 2026-31 March 2028),” the department said on X on Wednesday.
The ten countries’ membership in the PSC will be confirmed at the 39th Ordinary Session of the assembly of heads of state of the African Union, which will be held from February 14–15 in Addis Ababa.
The remaining five members of the PSC – Nigeria, Ethiopia, Cameroon, Eswatini, and Algeria – were elected to three-year terms last year.
