Los Angeles, Jan 8 (.) Amazon MGM Studios has announced several new cast members for its upcoming ‘Tomb Raider’ series, based on the popular video game franchise and set to stream on Prime Video.
The studio had earlier revealed that Sophie Turner will star as the iconic adventurer Lara Croft. The latest additions to the cast include Sigourney Weaver, Jason Isaacs, Celia Imrie, Bill Paterson, and others.
The series is created and written by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who also serves as executive producer and co-showrunner alongside Chad Hodge. Jonathan Van Tulleken will direct the show.
Some of the newly announced actors will portray familiar characters from the Tomb Raider games. Martin Bobb-Semple will play Zip, Lara Croft’s tech-savvy ally and close friend. Jason Isaacs has been cast as Atlas DeMornay, Lara’s uncle, while Bill Paterson will appear as Winston, the Croft family’s long-serving butler.
Other cast members will take on original roles created specifically for the series. Sigourney Weaver will portray Evelyn Wallis, a powerful figure seeking to exploit Lara’s abilities. Celia Imrie will be seen as Francine, a senior official at the British Museum, while Sasha Luss will play Sasha, a formidable rival to Lara. Jack Bannon, Paterson Joseph, Juliette Motamed, John Heffernan, and August Wittgenstein will also feature in key roles.
Speaking about stepping into the role of Lara Croft, Sophie Turner said she has long admired the character and views her as a symbol of strength in a male-dominated world.
“I’ve been a long-time fan of Tomb Raider and the character of Lara. She has always felt, for me, very emboldened in a male-dominated world. She’s a fierce female role model,” Turner said in a statement.
The series is being produced by Amazon MGM Studios in collaboration with Crystal Dynamics and Legendary Television. A release date has not yet been announced.
