New Delhi, Jan 28 (.) The stock market today closed on a strong note driven by optimism over an India-EU free trade agreement, with Nifty ending in green above 25,300 points.
At close, Sensex rose by 487.20 points or 0.60 per cent to 82,344.68, and the Nifty edged higher by 167.35 points or 0.66 pc to 25,342.75.
The BSE Midcap 150 index jumped 1.69 pc, while the Smallcap 250 index surged 1.81 pc, as the overall market capitalisation of BSE-listed firms jumped to nearly Rs 460 lakh crore from nearly Rs 454 lakh crore in the previous session.
Among the sectors, almost all the sectoral indices ended higher. Those in red were Nifty FMCG down by 0.71 pc, followed by Pharma by 0.22 pc, and Healthcare by 0.20 pc.
Nifty Oil and Gas (3.40 pc) ended at the top. It was followed by Metal (2.34 pc), Media (2.13 pc), PSU Bank (1.68 pc), and Realty (1.57 pc).
Further, Nifty Bank jumped 0.66 pc and the Financial Services index rose by 1 pc.
On Nifty, around 32 stocks ended higher. These included Bharat Electronics (BEL) (9.21 pc), ONGC (8.18 pc), and Coal India (5.27 pc) as top ones. Those on the losing end were Tata Consumer (4.55 pc), Asian Paints (4.22 pc), and Maruti Suzuki India (2.39 pc).
The advance-decline ratio remained in favour of advancers as over 2,900 stocks advanced while over 1,300 declined on the BSE.
On the BSE, nearly 86 stocks hit their 52-week highs while 261 stocks hit their 52-week lows.
Those hitting highs included Axis Bank, BEL, SBI, Tata Steel and Tech Mahindra. While on the lows were Gujarat Fluorochemicals, Patanjali Foods, Syngene International, Brigade Enterprises, Jyothy Labs and Akzo Nobel India.
Shares of Adani Group companies rebounded sharply by up to 5 pc. Adani Enterprises shares rose nearly 5 pc, while Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone gained over 4 pc. Adani Green Energy also advanced nearly 4 pc, Adani Energy Solutions rose 4 pc and Adani Power was up over 2 pc.
