New Delhi, Feb 24 (.) The Stock market today slumped, with both BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty crashing by up to 1.28 per cent, dragged lower by a sharp sell-off in IT shares.
At closing, Sensex settled 1,068.74 points or 1.28 pc lower at 82,225.92, while the broader Nifty was at 25,424.65, down 288.35 points or 1.12 pc. Earlier in the day, the Sensex opened at 83,052.54, declining by 242.12 points or 0.29 pc.
In terms of stocks, IT plunged over 4 pc, Nifty Realty declined by over 2 pc leading the losing ends.
On the gaining side were PSU Bank, Pharma, Metal and Oil & Gas in the range of 0.3 to 1 pc. On Nifty, the key gainers were HUL, Hindalco Industries, Coal India, NTPC, JSW Steel. Biggest losers included Tech Mahindra, Eternal, Infosys, TCS, HCL Technologies.
About 1,382 shares advanced, 2,670 shares declined and 129 shares were unchanged. On the BSE, around 90 stocks touched their 52-week high while nearly 350 stocks touched their 52-week low. Those on the highs were Bank of Maharashtra, NTPC, Polycab India, Astral, Bharat Forge, Torrent Pharma, union Bank of India, Jindal Steel, JB Chemicals, Marico, Bank of India, Cummins, Indian Bank, Federal Bank, SBI, L&T, among others.
The key ones on the low included LT Technology, KPIT Technologies, Hexaware Technologies, Zensar Technologies, Tata Tech, Info Edge, Tata Elxsi, Sonata Software, Infosys, TCS, CE Info Systems, Cyient, Network 18, Wipro, Vedant Fashions, SRF, Just Dial, among others.
Notably, the share price of Bharti Airtel fell 2 pc on Rs 20,000 crore investment in Airtel Money.
Indian rupee traded in a narrow range and settled 6 paise lower at 90.95 against the US dollar.
