New Delhi, Jan 20 (.) The stock market on Tuesday witnessed a sharp sell-off with benchmark indices plunging more than 1%. Nifty fell below the 25,200 mark.
At close, the Sensex was down 1,065.78 points or 1.28% at 82,180.47, and the Nifty was down 353 points or 1.38% at 25,232.50. BSE Midcap and Smallcap indices also fell over 2% each.
The overall market capitalisation of BSE-listed firms dropped to nearly Rs 456 lakh crore from nearly Rs 468 lakh.
Among the sectors, Nifty Realty crashed over 5%, Consumer Durables 3% while the Auto, IT, Metal, and Pharma indices fell by 2% each.
Further, the Nifty Bank index declined by 0.81%, while the Financial Services index fell by 1.16%.
On Nifty, Bajaj Finance, ETERNAL and Bajaj Finserv were among the key laggards declining up to 2 percent. Further, NTPC and Hindustan Unilever rose up to 1%.
Over 700 stocks hit 52-week low on the BSE. These included Aditya Birla Fashion, Aditya Birla Real Estate, Godrej Properties, Praj Industries, Lodha Developer, Zee Entertainment, Newgen Software, Relaxo Footwear, Network 18, Tejas Networks, NCC, Action Construction, Inox Wind, Indian Hotels, Jyothy Labs, Cohance Life, Concord Biotech, among others.
The rupee depreciated 7 paise to close at a record low of 90.97 against the US dollar.
Among the realty indices, Oberoi Realty shares was the top loser dropping around 9%, Sobha, Prestige Estates and Macrotech Developers (Lodha) fell around 6%.
Further, Godrej Properties and DLF shares dropped around 5% and 3%, respectively.
Among the banking stocks, Yes Bank and IndusInd Bank shares were the top losers falling over 4% each. HDFC Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank and State Bank of India (SBI) shares were trading in the green with marginal gains.
