‎Washington, Feb 23 (.) US President Donald Trump on Monday issued a stark warning to foreign governments, dismissing as “ridiculous” a recent Supreme Court decision that struck down his emergency‑tariff authority and threatened to slap “much higher” duties on any country that “plays games” with the ruling.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump wrote: “Any country that wants to ‘play games’ with the ridiculous Supreme Court decision, especially those that have ‘Ripped Off’ the U.S.A. for years, and even decades, will be met with a much higher Tariff, and worse, than that which they just recently agreed to. BUYER BEWARE!!! Thank you for your attention to this matter.” ‎
The warning follows a 6‑3 Supreme Court decision on February 20 that found Trump had exceeded his authority under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) when he imposed sweeping global tariffs. The Supreme Court observed that the president’s claim of “extraordinary power to unilaterally impose tariffs of unlimited amount, duration, and scope” lacked “clear congressional authorisation.”
The court’s ruling nullified most of the tariffs Trump had levied on nearly every US trading partner, prompting him to invoke Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974 to impose a temporary 10 per cent global tariff, which he quickly raised to the statutory maximum of 15 per cent “effective immediately.”
‎Trump’s post signals that, despite the judicial setback, he intends to keep tariffs as a central tool of his economic agenda. “Based on a thorough, detailed, and complete review of the ridiculous, poorly written, and extraordinarily anti‑American decision on Tariffs … I will be, effective immediately, raising the 10% Worldwide Tariff … to the fully allowed, and legally tested, 15% level,” he wrote on Truth Social, adding that new “legally permissible” tariffs would be announced in the coming months under other statutory authorities.
‎Economists and trade analysts warn that such abrupt tariff hikes could ripple through global supply chains, inflate commodity prices, and raise costs for US businesses and consumers. “Sudden threats of tariff increases can disrupt global supply chains, affect commodity markets, and increase costs for businesses and consumers,” one analyst noted, echoing concerns voiced by many in the industry.
‎Trump’s rhetoric continues his long‑standing narrative of defending US economic interests against countries he accuses of “ripping off” America. By framing the Supreme Court’s decision as a “ridiculous” obstacle, he reinforces his image as a tough‑negotiator willing to use tariffs as leverage, even as legal challenges mount. . SKA .
