New Delhi, Feb 10 (.) The Oscar-nominated film ‘The Secret Agent’ is set to release in Indian cinemas after a successful run at major international film festivals and award ceremonies.
Starring Wagner Moura, the Brazilian political thriller has garnered global acclaim for its compelling storytelling and powerful performances.
Set in Brazil in 1977, a period marked by political unrest and widespread fear, the film follows Marcelo, a technology expert attempting to escape a troubled past. Returning to his hometown of Recife in search of a quieter life, he soon finds himself entangled in a dangerous world of espionage, moral dilemmas, and personal sacrifice.
Directed by acclaimed Brazilian filmmaker Kleber Mendonça Filho, ‘The Secret Agent’ features Moura in the lead role and has been widely praised by critics and audiences alike for its nuanced narrative, direction, and performances. The film has received four Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actor.
Speaking about the film’s Indian release, director Kleber Mendonça Filho said, “The Secret Agent is a film shaped by memory, personal, political, and cinematic. Though set in 1977, it speaks to recurring patterns in society that still feel very present today. I’m thrilled that Indian audiences will experience the film in cinemas, where its atmosphere and tension truly unfold.”
The film also enjoyed significant success at the Cannes Film Festival, where Mendonça Filho won Best Director and Moura was awarded Best Actor. Its accolades continued at the Golden Globes, with Moura taking home the Best Actor in a Drama award, while the film won Best Foreign Language Film.
Speaking about his role, Moura described Marcelo as an unconventional protagonist—a man striving to retain his humanity in a world fraught with challenges. Expressing his excitement about the film’s Indian release, he said audiences would connect with its emotional depth and political themes.
“Marcelo is not a conventional hero; he is a man trying to remain humane in a world that constantly tests him. The response to the film has been overwhelming, and I’m excited for Indian audiences to connect with its emotional and political resonance,” Moura said in a statement.
‘The Secret Agent’ is scheduled to release in theatres across India on February 27.
