Los Angeles, Feb 2 (.) Trevor Noah opened the Grammy Awards with a sharp joke aimed at Nicki Minaj, briefly dipping into political territory by mocking her recent praise of Donald Trump.
While bantering with stars in the audience, Noah pointed out Minaj’s absence from the ceremony. “Nicki Minaj isn’t here tonight,” he said, joking that she was “still at the White House with Donald Trump, talking about very important issues,” Variety reported.
Launching into a Trump impression and referencing Cardi B’s viral hit “WAP,” Noah continued, “‘Actually, Nicki, I have the biggest ass. Everybody’s saying it. I know they say it’s you, but it’s me. WAP, WAP, WAP. Look at it.’”
According to Variety, Minaj has recently sparked debate among fans due to her highly visible support of Trump and the MAGA movement.
Last year, Noah’s monologue struck a more subdued tone in light of the devastating Los Angeles wildfires, though he still took aim at the Trump administration’s tariffs.
The Feb 1 ceremony marks Noah’s sixth time hosting the Grammys—and his final appearance as emcee. The news was revealed in January by the show’s executive producer, Ben Winston of Fulwell Entertainment.
“I am beyond thrilled to welcome Trevor Noah back to host the Grammys for his sixth, and sadly, final time,” Winston said at the time.
As per Variety, “He’s been the most phenomenal host of the show, smart, funny, and a true fan of the artists and music. His impact on the show has been truly spectacular, and we can’t wait to do it together one last time.”
The 68th Annual Grammy Awards are being held at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. Kendrick Lamar leads the night with nine nominations, including album, record and song of the year.
