Moscow, Jan 15 (.) Russian President Vladimir Putin listed the Ukraine conflict as an example of breaching the “indivisibility of security” principle, which outlines that the security of one nation cannot be achieved at the expense of others.
“This was clearly demonstrated by the crisis around Ukraine, which was a direct consequence of years of ignoring Russia’s legitimate interests and a deliberate course of threatening our security and advancing NATO toward Russia’s borders – contrary to the public promises made to us,” he said while reaffirming Moscow’s commitment to reaching a lasting, sustainable peace in Ukraine.
He also said that Russia is sincerely committed to the ideals of a multipolar world order. On Thursday, Putin received the credentials from 34 newly arrived foreign ambassadors in the Kremlin, including the Taliban ambassador.
Putin said that Russia is committed to maintaining open relationships with those willing to cooperate.
“Our country has always pursued and will continue to pursue a balanced, constructive foreign policy course that takes into account both our national interests and objective trends in global development,” Putin said, adding that Russia is always open to building equal, mutually beneficial relations with international partners.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Thursday that the West does not want an end to the conflict in Ukraine and peace.
“The fact that the West does not want the conflict to end, does not want any peace, just as they never wanted it, is evidenced by the uninterrupted operation of the airport in Poland’s Rzeszow, through which a steady flow of military cargo for the needs of the Ukrainian armed forces has been passing since 2022,” Zakharova told a briefing.
The actions of European and NATO countries to pump up Kiev with military and financial resources speak volumes about their true intentions, even more so than hypocritical words about their desire for peace, the spokeswoman added.
The remarks come after US President Donald Trump said that Kyiv is not eager to reach a peace deal. “I think he’s ready to make a deal,” Trump was quoted as saying of the Russian president. “I think Ukraine is less ready to make a deal,” he said, naming Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as obstructing a settlement.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Moscow agrees with President Trump’s view that Ukraine is holding up a peace deal to end the almost four years of fighting. Peskov said, “Yes, we can agree with it, it’s indeed so.”
Putin said Thursday that Moscow, like Ukraine, demands security guarantees as part of a prospective peace deal. “We must proceed from the premise that security must be truly universal, and therefore equal and indivisible, and it cannot be ensured for some at the expense of the security of others,” Putin said.
“In the absence of it, Russia will continue to consistently pursue the goals it has set,” Putin added.
“Peace doesn’t come by itself, it’s built, and every day. Peace requires effort, responsibility, and conscious choice. The relevance of this is obvious, especially now, when the situation on the international stage is increasingly deteriorating – I believe no one would argue with that – old conflicts are intensifying, and new serious flashpoints are emerging,” Putin stated.
In the modern world, diplomacy and a search for consensus are “being replaced by unilateral, and quite dangerous, actions,” Putin added. Many countries face the dictate of those taking the “might makes right” approach, he said.
“Dozens of countries around the world suffer from violation of their sovereign rights, from chaos and lawlessness, and do not have the strength and resources to stand up for themselves,” the Russian president stated.
