Washington Feb 26 (.) The United States and the Kingdom of Tonga on Thursday announced a new partnership to advance marine scientific research aimed at supporting the responsible exploration of seabed mineral resources.
In a joint statement, the two governments said the cooperation would focus on strengthening scientific research to inform seabed exploration while helping shape appropriate global regulatory frameworks and standards in line with international law.
“The Governments of the United States of America and the Kingdom of Tonga are pleased to announce our cooperation to advance marine scientific research for the responsible exploration of seabed mineral resources,” the statement said.
The United States has initiated discussions with Tonga to support research necessary for seabed exploration, incorporating Tonga’s longstanding experience in ocean stewardship and its international legal obligations.
The two countries described the collaboration as “a new chapter” in bilateral relations since establishing diplomatic ties in 1971, reaffirming their shared commitment to marine science, technological advancement, economic self-reliance, and environmental stewardship in the Blue Pacific region.
“Tonga, with its longstanding history of ocean stewardship, and the United States, with its expertise in oceanic research and technology, are uniquely positioned to work together,” the statement said, adding that exploration efforts would be guided by “rigorous science and deep historical knowledge of regional fisheries.”
Both nations also pledged to respect cultural traditions and the deep connection of Pacific communities to the ocean.
“Together, we commit to responsible exploration of seabed minerals and enhancing global scientific understanding of the deep ocean, and to setting an exemplary standard for transparent seabed exploration,” the statement added.
